Recumbent Trikes of Tennessee
What is a recumbent trike? It is a three-wheeled cycle where the rider sits in a reclined, "laid-back" position with feet extended forward to the pedals.
Is it hard to ride? Most people find them very easy to learn because there is no balance required. Steering feels different, and it can take some time (sometimes called "getting your bent legs") to build the specific muscles used for recumbent riding. Most new riders have no problem adjusting to the seat and are riding several miles the first day.
Are they faster than regular bikes? It depends on the model and the rider's fitness. While they can be more aerodynamic, the extra wheel and weight often make them slightly slower on average, though specialized racing models can be very fast. The casual rider can expect to ride at 10-12 miles per hour while a trike designed for speed can average over 20 miles per hour or more.
Can they climb hills? Yes, but they handle differently. Because you cannot stand on the pedals, you must use low gears and "spin" up the hill. A major advantage is that you can't tip over, so you can climb as slowly as needed or even stop to rest without getting off. The benefit is going downhill where wind resistance is low and a rider can really pick up some speed if desired.
Are they safe? Many riders feel safer on trikes because they are extremely stable and virtually impossible to flip forward. If a fall does occur, the rider is much closer to the ground. Automobile drivers tend to give trikes more room on the road and with a flag and some lights, you are visible both on the road and on the trail.
Is a recumbent trike good for back and joint pain? Yes, this is one of the main reasons people switch to them. The wide, chair-like seats provide full back support, eliminating the wrist, neck, and saddle soreness common with upright bikes. The fact that you are sitting down helps eliminate knee pain and there is not wrist pain from supporting your bodyweight on a typical upright handlebar.
How do you transport them? Because they are wider and longer, they can require specialized car racks or trailers. However, many modern models are designed to fold to fit inside a hatchback or SUV. Some models can even fit in the trunk of a car.
Can I use them for commuting? Many people use them for work or errands because of their comfort and ability to carry cargo in bags or trailers without affecting stability.
Do you sell electric assist trikes? Yes we do! Almost every trike we sell can be converted to electric assist. This means that you have a motor that helps you with those steep hills or long rides. We do not have throttle only motors, so you do have to pedal, but electric assist with torque based sensors is a great way to have a natural feeling ride with the boost of electric. Because you are pedaling, you still get the benefits of exercise without the added stress on your joints that steep hills can cause.
